Here’s a crash course in SEO. Search engine optimization distills into two activities: on-page and off-page SEO.
On-page means the optimization efforts made on or in website. For example, the keywords chosen and their placement is a good example of on-page optimization techniques.
As the web grows, keyword research is critically important. You want to use keywords that are actually searched, but don’t have so much competition that you’ll never have those keywords work for you. It’s a balancing act.
Off-page SEO is about getting links to your website. Search engines in large part judge the value of a website by the number of links to a particular site and the quality of those links.
For example, a link from Fox News website is far more valuable than a link from your local hair salon owned by a friend. You also want links from websites and blogs that are related in content to your site.
Also get links from sites whose content is similar to yours. For instance, if your site is a law firm, get links from other lawyers. Don’t waste time getting links from a hair salon website.
Is it easy getting links? You bet, but it takes work. There a three main styles of link building.
1. Create such great content that other websites, without any prompting from you, link to your site. Content can be articles, videos, podcasts, and/or photos.
2. Go out and get those links by asking other website and blog webmasters to swap links. You place their website on your site and they place your site on their site.
3. Create inbound links by writing and publishing content on sites outside your website.
My favorite method is number 3. There are many places to put out content with links to your site. You can write articles, comment on blogs, get you site bookmarked with social bookmarking sites, and write guest blog posts … to name a few methods.
The disadvantage to my approach, which works well, is it takes a lot of my time. Think about writing fresh content and then putting it on article directories. That takes time. Also, writing blog comments and posts takes a fair amount of time as well.
